Uncontracted trio still ‘in the mix’ for World Cup

The Uncontracted Trio: Still in Play for the Cricket World Cup and Tests

George Bailey, the head of the men\’s selection committee, has hinted Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Agar, and Michael Neser are still contenders for the national team, even after losing their national contracts. The statement brings a ray of hope to these players, akin to the joy of unearthing a hidden gem in a bustling antique market.

Stoinis and Agar continue to be considered for Australia’s T20 World Cup squad in June, despite their contracts not being renewed for the coming year. Jhye Richardson, despite his recent injuries, managed to retain his contract and could potentially feature in the World Cup as well.

Cricket Australia today unveiled a group of 23 centrally contracted men\’s players for the coming year. Stoinis and Agar, along with Marcus Harris, Michael Neser, and the retiring David Warner are no longer part of the contract list. However, all five will remain on the books until the end of June, coinciding with the T20 World Cup in the United States and Caribbean.

In spite of his recent back troubles, Stoinis showed promising signs of recovery during his performance for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL season opener. Agar, on the other hand, has been out of international cricket since his calf injury during the first ODI against South Africa last September.

Bailey indicated that the Australian squad for this year\’s World Cup might include another spinner alongside star Glenn Maxwell, due to the traditional slower pitches in the Caribbean. “Stoinis and Agar will be firmly in the mix for the squad,” Bailey asserted, giving the players and fans alike some much-needed assurance.

Despite missing out on the national contract, Queensland\’s Michael Neser may still find his way back to the Test side. Bailey reassured that Neser’s position in the pecking order remains unchanged, emphasizing that the door remains open for him.

In Bailey’s words, “Neser will firmly remain in the mix for that,” leaving fans and Neser himself with a glimmer of hope, much like the first light of dawn on an early morning.
